traditional-coriander-herb

Coriander has a very soothing and powerful aroma. As a matter of fact, coriander oil was an integral component of ancient Greek perfumes! However, there is much more to coriander than just its aroma as it has a wide variety of health benefits. Coriander leaves health benefits include preventing skin disorders, maintaining eye health and much more. Read on to know more about the aromatic and traditional coriander herb!

This Mediterranean traditional coriander herb forms a part of savoury dishes both in modern as well as traditional cuisines.  Apart from its culinary uses, coriander has been found to possess certain notable plant-derived chemical compounds which have disease preventing and health promoting properties. The leaves, roots and stems of the coriander plant have been found to have antiseptic and carminative properties.

Did You Know?
– Ancient Egyptians believed that coriander can be used as food in the afterlife
– Even though all parts of coriander are edible, people usually consume the leaves and seeds
– It contains phytochemicals that can delay spoilage of food
– Coriander is an annual plant, which means that it completes its life cycle in one year

The traditional coriander herb has eleven components of essential oils, six types of acids (including ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin C), minerals and vitamins; each having a number of beneficial properties.

Coriander Leaves health benefits

The health benefits of coriander include its use in the treatment of skin inflammation, high cholesterol levels, diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, anaemia, indigestion, menstrual disorders, smallpox, conjunctivitis, skin disorders, and blood sugar disorders, while also benefiting eye health.

Following are the some of the major coriander leaves health benefits:

Maintains Cardiovascular Health

The acids like linoleic acid, oleic acid, ascorbic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid present in coriander are very effective in lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. They also reduce the levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) deposition in the inner walls of the arteries and veins thereby preventing serious cardiovascular problems like atherosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes. Coriander leaves are a good source of potassium, calcium, manganese and iron. It is also low in sodium. The potassium to sodium ratio in coriander helps maintain heart rate and blood pressure.

Treats Menstrual Disorders

The traditional coriander herb acts as a natural stimulant and regulates proper secretion from the endocrine glands. It regulates proper menstrual cycles and also reduces the discomfort associated with menstruation.

Treats Skin Disorders

Coriander comes with detoxifying, disinfectant, antiseptic and antifungal properties that are ideal for clearing up skin disorders such as eczema and dermatitis. The essential oils in coriander are rich in natural anti-microbial substances which can help cure smallpox.

Provides Eye Care

The traditional coriander herb is rich in antioxidants vitamin A and C and a mineral like phosphorous which helps prevent vision disorders, as well as reduce strain and stress on the eyes.

In some cases, the beta-carotene present in the leaves can even reverse the effects of vision degradation and also prevent other disorders that affect the eye. Coriander also protects the eye from contagious diseases like conjunctivitis.

Improves Bone Health

Coriander is greatly beneficial for people having issues with bone health. Calcium and other essential minerals present in coriander are integral components for bone regrowth and durability. Apart from this, it also provides protection against diseases like osteoporosis.

Detoxifies Heavy Metal

Coriander acts as a remarkable ‘chelation agent’ or heavy metal detoxifier. Heavy metals usually enter the body through consumption of non-organic food and cause serious problems like brain deterioration, cancer and heart diseases. The traditional coriander herb provides relief from mercury poisoning by mobilizing mercury from the brain and the central nervous system. It separates the mercury from the fat tissue and then removes it from the body through regular excretory channels.

How to use coriander leaves?

If you want to get relief from health-related issues, then adding a few leaves of coriander while cooking will do wonders to your health. Coriander is a wonderful addition to almost any dish. You can also prepare soups, chutneys and dips using coriander.
